Match your car socket to your trailer plug
Your trailer plug does not match your car's towbar socket. An adapter may solve that, but the description “7-pin to 13-pin” is not enough on its own: you need the right connections at each end.
Start with the socket on the car, then check the plug on the trailer, caravan or bike rack. This guide shows which adapter to choose, what it will power and when the vehicle wiring needs more than an adapter.

Which trailer adapter do I need?
Car has a 7-pin socket; trailer has a 13-pin plug: choose an adapter with a 7-pin vehicle connection and a 13-pin trailer socket.
Car has a 13-pin socket; trailer has a 7-pin plug: choose the opposite adapter, with a 13-pin vehicle connection and a 7-pin trailer socket.
Important: a basic adapter using a single 7-pin lighting connection does not add reversing lights, caravan battery charging or fridge power. It changes the connection, not the circuits available.
Choose by your car socket and trailer plug
These two adapters solve opposite connection problems. They are not interchangeable. The choices below are for a standard UK 12V towing setup using a single 7-pin 12N lighting connection.
7-pin car socket
13-pin trailer plug
You need: a 7-pin plug at the vehicle end and a 13-pin socket to accept the trailer plug.
GT Towing part: 9901
Price: £15 including VAT.
This provides the basic lighting connection. It will not supply the additional functions normally carried by a fully wired 13-pin system.

7-pin trailer plug
You need: a 13-pin plug at the vehicle end and a 7-pin socket to accept the trailer plug.
GT Towing part: A-5550
Price: £15 including VAT.
This connects a 7-pin trailer or lighting board to a 13-pin vehicle. It cannot add functions that the trailer's 7-pin plug does not carry.

How to tell whether you have a 7-pin or 13-pin socket
The vehicle socket is the fixed connection beside the towbar. The trailer plug is on the end of its electrical lead. Open the socket cover and compare the contact layout, not just the colour or age of the car.
7-pin 12N lighting socket
Seven contact positions for the normal lighting connection. Do not confuse it with a separate 7-pin 12S auxiliary socket on an older twin-socket caravan setup.
13-pin towing socket
A different contact layout and twist-lock connection. A 13-pin housing does not prove every auxiliary circuit is wired into the vehicle.
For a wider explanation of connector types, see our UK trailer plug and socket guide.
What works through a basic 7-pin/13-pin adapter?
A standard 7-pin 12N connection carries lighting circuits, not all the extra connections available in a 13-pin system. The table below applies to the basic single-socket adapters shown above, assuming the vehicle and trailer wiring are working correctly.
| Function | Through a basic single 7-pin adapter? |
|---|---|
| Indicators and brake lights | Yes |
| Tail lights, position lights and number plate lighting | Yes |
| Rear fog light | Yes |
| Reversing light | No |
| Caravan battery charging or permanent power | No |
| Caravan fridge power while towing | No |
A connection that fits is not automatically a suitable towing setup. If your trailer requires a working reversing light, an adapter that leaves it unpowered is not a suitable solution. Have the vehicle supply and trailer requirements checked.
What about caravans and towbar bike racks?
Caravans with one 13-pin plug
A basic adapter from a single 7-pin car socket may connect the lighting, but will not provide caravan charging, fridge power or reversing lights. A fully suitable setup depends on the required circuits being present in the vehicle wiring, connection and caravan.
Older caravans with two 7-pin plugs
These usually separate road lighting through 12N from auxiliary functions through 12S. They need the correct twin-connection conversion arrangement, not just one of the compact adapters above. Confirm the direction and wiring requirements with GT Towing before ordering.
Bike racks with a lighting board
Choose by the rack's actual plug and your car's socket. A 13-pin rack and a 7-pin car need the first direction shown above. Check the rack manufacturer's adapter guidance and required lighting functions, particularly where a reversing light is fitted. Do not assume an adapter solves an LED compatibility or vehicle wiring fault.
Connecting an adapter and checking the lights
- Check both connectors. Look for damage, corrosion, water or bent contacts before connecting.
- Fit without forcing. Align the connectors and engage the retaining or twist-lock mechanism according to the instructions.
- Check the lead. Leave enough movement for turning without allowing it to drag, become trapped or pull tight.
- Test before travelling. Check the required trailer lights with another person or a suitable tester. Do not assume that working indicators mean every circuit works.
If lights flicker, behave incorrectly or remain off, the cause may be in the plug, socket, earth connection, wiring or vehicle system rather than the adapter alone. Use our trailer lights troubleshooting guide for fault checks. If a 13-pin plug will not align, see our 13-pin plug alignment guide rather than forcing it.
When is it better to upgrade to 13-pin electrics?
An adapter is useful when the connector shapes differ but the available circuits meet your needs. An upgrade is worth discussing when you need additional functions, regularly use 13-pin equipment or have a damaged or unreliable electrical installation.
Changing the socket housing alone does not add the missing circuits. A suitable upgrade may require a compatible wiring kit, dedicated power feeds and vehicle-specific setup. Tell the installer whether you need trailer lighting only or caravan charging and fridge connections as well.

Trailer adapter questions
Is a 7-pin to 13-pin adapter the same as a 13-pin to 7-pin adapter?
No. The vehicle-facing and trailer-facing connections are different. Check which socket is on the car and which plug is on the trailer rather than relying on the order of the numbers in a product title.
Will an adapter make my trailer's reversing light work?
Not through a basic single 7-pin 12N lighting connection. That connection has no reversing-light circuit. The required supply must be provided through a suitable electrical setup.
Does a 13-pin socket always charge a caravan battery?
No. The relevant vehicle power feeds and caravan wiring must be present and suitable. A socket with 13 contact positions does not confirm that every circuit is connected.
Do I need an adapter for my Thule bike rack?
Only if its plug and your vehicle socket differ. Check the exact rack instructions, connector direction and required lighting functions before selecting an adapter.
Will replacing the adapter fix trailer lights that are not working?
Only if the adapter is the cause. Damaged contacts, poor earth connections and other wiring faults can produce similar symptoms, so check the system rather than repeatedly replacing parts.
Not sure which connection you have?
Email clear photos of the car socket with its cover open and the trailer or bike-rack plug to sales@gttowing.co.uk. Include your vehicle model and what you are connecting. Alternatively, use our contact form to describe the setup and ask for advice.
