A Step-by-Step Guide for Secure Towing
Watch the full step-by-step guide
Correctly hitching and unhitching your trailer is essential for road safety and peace of mind. A small mistake like an unsecured coupling or forgotten light check can result in serious issues. Whether you’re towing for work or leisure, getting this process right is critical.
To help, we’ve created a simple guide that walks you through every key step. Watch the demonstration above or follow the written steps below to build confidence and keep your setup secure.
Hitching a Trailer: Step-by-Step
- Line Up the Vehicle
Reverse slowly until the vehicle’s towball is directly beneath the trailer coupling. A second person can help guide you into position. - Lower the Coupling
Use the jockey wheel to lower the trailer onto the towball until it locks into place. - Check the Coupling Lock
Use the built-in indicator or lift the latch to confirm it’s fully connected. - Attach the Breakaway Cable
Secure the breakaway cable to a designated point on the vehicle. Avoid looping it around the towball. - Connect the Trailer Electrics
Plug in the trailer electrics and test all lights: indicators, brake lights and running lights. - Raise and Secure the Jockey Wheel
Wind the jockey wheel fully up and lock it into its travel position. - Final Walkaround Check
Check tyre pressure, ensure the load is secure and confirm all safety steps are complete before setting off.
Unhitching a Trailer: Step-by-Step
- Apply the Trailer Handbrake
Prevent any movement before you begin. - Disconnect the Electrical Plug
Unplug the trailer’s electric connector and secure it safely. - Remove the Breakaway Cable
Detach the cable and stow it in a safe, clean position. - Lower the Jockey Wheel
Wind it down until the trailer is lifted off the towball. - Release the Coupling
Use the release latch or handle to fully disconnect from the vehicle. - Stabilise the Trailer
If parked on a slope or uneven surface, use wheel chocks for added security.
Avoid These Common Mistakes
- Failing to double-check trailer lights
- Leaving the jockey wheel down
- Incorrect attachment of the breakaway cable
- Skipping a final safety inspection
