What is the Thule Arcos
Arcos is a towbar mounted cargo box. It locks to a standard 50 mm towball, has integrated rear lights and a number plate holder, and opens from the rear for easy loading. Because it mounts to the towbar, you do not need roof bars. It is a smart option if you want extra space with simple loading at waist height.

Rear cargo box vs roof box
Reasons to choose Arcos
- Low loading height. Lift bags in at waist height. No step stool needed.
- Better for range and noise. Sits in the car’s slipstream which helps efficiency compared with a large roof box.
- Keep your roof free. Handy if you carry bikes, kayaks or a roof tent on bars.
- Easier parking. No extra roof height for car parks or garages.
When a roof box may suit better
- You want to tow a trailer at the same time. The towbar would already be in use.
- Your car does not yet have a towbar and you prefer to add roof bars instead.

Fitting, access and compatibility
Arcos fits to a standard 50 mm towball. Set the carrier on the ball, lock it, plug in the lights, and attach your number plate. Most vehicles still allow boot access with the Arcos fitted. On some cars it tilts clear or can be removed in seconds if you need full access.
- Vehicle checks. Ensure your car has a towbar with the correct vertical load rating.
- Lighting. Plug the 13 pin or 7 pin electrics in so indicators, tails and brake lights work on the box.
- Security. Arcos uses Thule’s one key system. Lock the box to the carrier and lock the lid once loaded.

Capacity, weight and legal bits
Exact figures vary by model and vehicle, but you can use these rules of thumb:
- Volume. Typically 300 to 400 litres which is similar to a medium roof box.
- Load. Up to 50 kg on the carrier depending on the vertical load limit of your towbar and vehicle. Always follow the lowest rated figure.
- Number plate. Fit a matching rear plate on the Arcos. The built in light bar must be connected.
- Clearance. Check tailgate clearance and the angle from towball to ground on steep ramps.

Why Arcos suits electric and hybrid cars
Roof loads increase drag which can reduce range. Arcos rides in the slipstream behind the vehicle so it is more efficient than a large roof box at motorway speeds. There is no extra roof height to manage and the low loading height is handy on taller SUVs and crossovers.
What you can carry
- Family luggage. Soft bags, coats and shoes that free the boot for passengers.
- Camping kit. Compact tents, cooking gear and bedding. Keep heavy items central and low.
- Sports gear. Wetsuits, helmets, smaller boards and training kit. Use dry bags for wet items.
- Dog gear. Useful for crates, towels and accessories. Arcos is not a pet carrier.

Frequently asked questions
Will my boot still open
On most cars yes. Some will open fully, others partially. The carrier can tilt or the box can be removed in seconds if you need full access.
Do I need roof bars
No. Arcos fits to the towbar so roof bars are not required.
Can I tow a trailer at the same time
No. The towbar is in use. If you need to tow, choose a roof box instead.
Is it weatherproof
Arcos is designed for year round use. As with any external box, pack soft items in dry bags for severe weather.
Is it secure
Yes. The carrier locks to the towbar and the lid locks to protect contents. Always remove valuables overnight.
